Getting There
By Air:
- Portland International Jetport (PWM) -- 3 hours from Bar Harbor
- Bangor International Airport (BGR) -- 1 hour from Bar Harbor
- Hancock County - Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) -- 20 minutes from Bar Harbor
By Car:
From Boston, take I-95 north to Bangor. At Bangor, take the I-395 connector (exit 45A) to Route 1A to Ellsworth. At Ellsworth, follow Route 3 east to Bar Harbor.
Alternatively, take I-95 north to Augusta, then Rte. 3 along the coast to Belfast. From there, take Rte. 1 to Ellsworth, and then Rte. 3 east to Bar Harbor.
Bear left after crossing the bridge onto Mount Desert Island. The College of the Atlantic (COA) is on the ocean side of Rte. 3, about eight miles from the head of Mount Desert Island and one-quarter mile beyond the Nova Scotia Ferry Terminal. Pass the first (main) entrance to COA on your left and look for the second entrance. Enter and park in the provided areas.
By Train:
Amtrak operates trains from New York to Boston and from Boston to Portland. You must transfer between stations in Boston, and travel by car or bus from Portland to Bar Harbor.

By Bus:
Bus service is available to Bangor and, less frequently, to Ellsworth and Bar Harbor.

By Bar Harbor-Bangor Shuttle:
A shuttle bus makes several trips a day between Bar Harbor and Bangor’s airport and bus depots. Prices start at $25 per person. Reservations are required. For rates and schedules, call 207-479-5911 or visit www.barharborshuttle.com. When you call, ask if it’s possible to be dropped off or picked up at the College of the Atlantic.
Getting Around
The Island Explorer is a free bus system on Mount Desert Island that connects campgrounds, hiking trails, hotels, museums, villages, and more. The clean, propane-powered buses make scheduled stops and can also be flagged down wherever it is safe to stop. All buses are equipped with bicycle racks. And there’s even a bus stop at COA!
